The Library Bees of the Arlington, Virginia Central Library Vegetable Gardens

Photographed by Jim Rosso, on June 23, 2014

Some Cosmos sulfureus cultivar form a border along the library's parking lot and tennis court and range in color from yellow to deep orange.

The light from the sun was consistent enough that I didn't need to use flash.

Lift Off

One of the more amazing factors about photographing insects is that quite often the photographer does not get to see what is being photographed. Things change very quickly, more quickly than the photographer can see. For example when I photographed this bumblebee it was sitting on the flower. But in the time between my conscious decision to take the picture and the shutter engaging, the bumble bee has lifted off the flower and one can see a small bit of pollen drop from its body.
